How to prevent Winter Mould issues

Time and again we have heard complaints from bewildered homeowners regarding an unfortunate wintertime menace; moulding window features. Mould can seem to be part and parcel with consistently cold weather, but it doesn’t have to be.

Mould occurs when condensation builds up on a surface and is left to nurture spores. Condensation happens when water suspended in the air settles on a surface colder than the air, such as your windows. While being inherently disgusting, mould can also leave unsightly stains and odours where it chooses to thrive, taking your home from delightful retreat to gloomy hovel of muck in a blink.

The mold spores that inhabit our homes can cause or exacerbate existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, infections, or allergies, as well as being a potential eye irritant if left to spread. You’ll want to nip mould in the bud as soon as possible, as it will easily disperse and can become quite difficult to control.

Increasing ventilation can help avoid the precipitation that these abominable organisms thrive in. Open bathroom windows after showering to let moist air out, with the door closed to keep the rest of your home warm. Insulate cold surfaces wherever possible, and ensure roof gutters are clear and in good nick before cold weather settles in, so any necessary maintenance work can be carried out in more favourable conditions.

Humidity is lower in a heated home, so keep your house reasonably temperate to combat the damp. Keep an eye out for specific problem areas that need addressing, and be quick to mop up any accumulated moisture you may notice, particularly around window frames. Dehumidifiers can be a useful aid in desperate situations, but are not a recommendable long-term solution. Instead, it would be advisable to address whatever structural pitfalls are causing the excess damp in your home in as timely a manner as possible.
